MJ Capovilla is a nature-inspired mixed-media artist working out of the woods of Pine Mountain Club, California. As a child, she was captivated by the quiet architecture of the natural world — the spiral of a shell, the grain of driftwood, the geometry of a pinecone — and that fascination never left her.

Finding Her Passion
After stepping away from a corporate career left her searching for purpose, a friend’s encouragement to pick up a paintbrush changed everything. What began as painting evolved into something wilder: assemblage art built from what she forages in her own backyard — bone, bloom, moss, and salvaged wood — transformed into pieces that feel equal parts wild and intentional.
Expanding through Creation
Her ongoing Feral Queen Series explores this wildness most directly — one-of-a-kind shadow boxes and assemblage pieces that give each found object a story and a name, celebrating the untamed, unapologetic spirit found in nature and in ourselves.
Most recently, that same spirit has taken shape in her Woodland Wearables collection — hand-painted earrings, bracelets, and headbands designed to bring a piece of the forest into everyday life.
Joy through Sharing
Mary Jo is a co-founder of Local Color Artist Collective, where she creates, teaches workshops, and helps build a home for local makers. Her work is available at Local Color in Pine Mountain Club and through her Etsy shop for those further afield.
